What 1 inch squares are good for

  • Pre-K and kindergarten: tracing numbers and letters, one per square.
  • Hundreds-style counting and simple arrays with counters placed on each square.
  • Quilting and patchwork planning at one inch per finished block.
  • Board games and battle maps: one square is the classic one-inch tabletop grid.
  • Cut-out shapes for area and tessellation lessons.

How many squares per page

A US Letter sheet in portrait holds 7 × 9 one-inch squares inside a 10 mm margin, and an A4 sheet holds 7 × 10. Switch to landscape for a wider grid, or choose ½ inch for twice as many squares in each direction.

Make sure an inch is an inch

Large squares make scaling errors easy to see but also easy to miss: a square that measures 0.97 in looks fine until you lay tokens or fabric on it. Print at 100% / Actual size and measure the 1 inch mark on the ruler at the bottom of the sheet. Our printing guide shows where the setting is in each browser.

Tips for classrooms

Turn on Name and date line, choose Black lines so the grid survives photocopying, and set Pages in PDF to your class size to print the whole set at once.
