What isometric paper is
Isometric paper is covered in equilateral triangles. Its lines run vertically and at 30° either side of horizontal: the three directions used for the edges of a cube in isometric drawing. Following the lines gives you correct 3D views without measuring a single angle.
What people use it for
- Maths lessons on 3D shapes, nets, volume and plans and elevations.
- Technical and product sketching before CAD.
- Game and level design, including pixel-style isometric maps.
- Lettering, logos and patterns based on hexagons and triangles.
Choosing a triangle size
The size is the length of each triangle side. 1 cm is the usual choice for classroom cube drawings. 5 mm or ¼ in suits detailed sketches. ½ in helps younger students and quick freehand work.
Isometric paper vs isometric dot paper
Line paper is easier for beginners because every edge you draw is already there. Dot paper leaves the page cleaner for finished drawings. Dot paper is coming soon; until then choose a light grey line colour for a similar quiet look.
Printing tips
Print at 100% / Actual size so the 30° lines stay true and triangles match the size you picked. Measure the ruler at the foot of the sheet to check. More help: print graph paper at actual size.
