Wide ruled vs college ruled paper
The difference is the space between the lines. Wide ruled paper has lines 11/32 inch (8.7 mm) apart. College ruled paper has lines 9/32 inch (7.1 mm) apart. That is about 1.6 mm, but over a whole page it means college ruled fits roughly seven more lines.
Side by side
| Wide ruled | College ruled | Narrow ruled | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Line spacing | 11/32 in (8.7 mm) | 9/32 in (7.1 mm) | 1/4 in (6.35 mm) |

| Best for | Learning to write, large handwriting | Everyday notes from middle school onwards | Small handwriting, dense notes |
Narrow ruled is the third US standard. It is less common in shops, but easy to print yourself.
Which one should you pick?
- Early grades and new writers: wide ruled. Younger children write larger, and the extra room makes letters easier to form and easier for a teacher to read. For letter-shape guides on top of the lines, use handwriting paper, which adds a dashed midline and a baseline.
- Middle school, high school and college: college ruled. It is the default for most notebooks and binder paper in the US, and it fits more on each page.
- Large or loose handwriting at any age: wide ruled. Choose the spacing your pen fits in comfortably, not the one that matches your age.
- Small handwriting or dense notes: narrow ruled, or a custom spacing.
- Lecture notes with questions and a summary: college ruled inside a Cornell notes template.
Many schools state which ruling they want on a supply list. If yours does not say, ask the teacher: wide ruled is the usual request for younger classes and college ruled for older ones.
Is it the same outside the US?
No. Rulings are often given in millimetres: 8 mm and 7 mm are common in many countries, which land close to wide and college ruled. If you need an exact size, open More options → Custom line spacing on the lined paper generator and type it in.
