Blank staff paper for composing and practice
Music staff paper, also called manuscript paper or blank sheet music, has groups of five horizontal lines called staves. Use it to write melodies, transcribe songs, complete theory homework or sketch arrangements before entering them into notation software.
Every staff on this sheet has five evenly spaced lines with short bar lines at each end, so you can start writing notes straight away. Clefs, time signatures and bar lines are left for you to add.
How many staves per page?
| Staves | Staff height | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 10 mm | Beginners, children, large handwriting |
| 8 | 10 mm | Lessons, lead sheets with room for chords and lyrics |
| 10 | 10 mm | Everyday composing (default) |
| 12 | about 9.5 mm | Standard manuscript paper, orchestral sketches |
Fewer staves leave more space between them for lyrics, chord symbols, fingering and dynamics. The staff height grows with the space available, up to 10 mm, which suits most handwriting.
Tips for students and teachers
- Theory homework: print 8 staves so there is room for written answers between them.
- Piano music: pair staves as a grand staff by adding a brace and clefs to every two staves.
- Class sets: turn on Name and date line and choose the number of pages under More options.
- Notebooks: choose A5 to fit small binders, or Landscape for wide phrases.
- Lyrics and chord drafts: plan the words on lined paper or a blank PDF first, then copy them under the staves.
Line weight and printing
Staff lines are black by default because notes need strong contrast. Choose Light for a softer page or Bold if lines fade on your printer. Print at 100% / Actual size so staves keep the same height on every copy; the printing guide shows where the setting is.
For lyrics or practice notes without staves, use lined paper. A guitar tab version is on our list of upcoming sheets.
Frequently asked questions
Is staff paper the same as sheet music?
Blank sheet music and staff paper are the same thing: empty staves with no notes. “Sheet music” on its own usually means printed music that already contains notes.
Can I download it as an image?
Yes. Choose PNG under the main buttons for a 300 dpi image, or SVG for a vector file you can scale without losing sharpness.
